What Makes Mouth Swish So Swishtastic??

Updated: Feb 16, 2020

Well, I'm glad you asked! While oil pulling itself has amazing benefits, Mouth Swish was created to make it a more pleasant experience. I have a short post about when and where (Splish Splash, You Can Swish in the Bath); this one will give you the rundown on what and why.

Oil pulling is simply swishing coconut oil (some have also used sesame) around in your mouth and between your teeth. 'Why in the world would a person want to do that?', you may be wondering. Not only is it the safest way to whiter teeth, the antibacterial properties clean up the mouth, creating an environment where plaque and gingivitis can't hang out. Later, fellas! Actually... Not later, fellas!

Dr. Axe sites some other great benefits of coconut oil that you may notice just from swishing, since it's highly absorbable... and dancing around in your mouth for 15 minutes!

Here's one of his lists that I found in this article:

Balance hormones

Kill candida

Improve digestion

Moisturize skin

Reduce cellulite

Decrease wrinkles and age spots

Balance blood sugar and improve energy

Improve Alzheimer’s

Increase HDL cholesterol and lower LDL cholesterol

Burn fat

Those are some serious benefits, y'all! And that's just the coconut oil!

I first learned that xylitol is good for teeth and mouth from Dr. Mary Schrick, ND. (She has a super groovy vibe and a heart to help people... ya gotta love that in a gal!) Practically speaking, xylitol is what makes Mouth Swish pleasant to the tastebuds. It tastes just like sugar, but couldn't be more different in regard to the effect it has in the ol' oral cavity. Rather than feeding bacteria, like sugar does, it gets absorbed by the bacteria and essentially kills it from the inside out. Go xylitol! You can do an online search for 'xylitol for oral health' and find a plethora of articles and studies to support it's use.

Peppermint oil. So yeah, this was added to Mouth Swish because it seemed like a great idea to have a little minty freshness going on. After researching it, I came across this quote from the Dental Group of Amarillo: Research has found that peppermint oil is exceptionally powerful for fighting oral pathogens and killing common bacteria that can lead to cavities and gum disease. So... BOOM! Turns out it does more than minty freshness!

And finally myrrh. Yeah, the same stuff that was given to baby Jesus (I love Him!!) as a gift! I heard Dr. Axe mention it in a video, so I did a little more digging to find out that its antimicrobial properties would be a fantastic addition to round out the Mouth Swish list of superpowers! When I was a little kid, I often had a mouth full of canker sores. It was miserable. If only there had been Google back then, we could have discovered that myrrh just might have cured what ailed me. But I know now, so that's awesome! Here's a great bit of info on myrrh.

So that's it folks... the run down of what and why in my Mouth Swish world! I hope you decide it give oil pulling a try!

To your health, friends! Peace.
